In the world of music technology, it’s hard to find someone who isn’t tempted by an affordable remake of a classic mic or vintage synth. However, in the ‘Best Innovation’ category, we’re looking at new products and services that are pushing the boundaries of technology and creativity. You’d be forgiven for thinking that this category would be dominated by software, but that’s far from the case.
While we have been deeply impressed by Tim Exile’s Endlesss remixing app, Melodyne 5’s sibilance control tools and Audio Test Kitchen’s online mic comparison tool, the world of hardware is also heavily represented. To name a couple, the ASM Hydrasynth blew our minds with its wave morphing engine; and with its Element mic, Aston has developed a new ‘Ridyon’ capsule that combines the benefits of ribbons, dynamics and condensers. Then there’s Roland Zenology, which is the technology that lets you load virtually any modelled synth into Roland hardware devices.
