Studio Interviews: Mike Enes

Tell us about the studio, Mike…

“After moving back to my hometown of Rochester, New York, I decided to dive into audio engineering, as it combines both of my interests in and love for music and engineering.

“The space was built from scratch, so the wall dimensions and separations were carefully designed to meet the 38% rule – meaning that the ceiling height is 38% of the width and the width is 38% of the length. This optimal dimensioning is called the ‘golden ratio of audio-room dimensioning’ and provides a best-case environment for the prevention of standing waves and wave cancellation.”

You have lots of guitars as well as hi-tech gear…

“I have an American Fender Stratocaster, a Gibson Les Paul Studio, a Fender Precision bass with flatwound strings, and a Music Man StingRay bass. I consulted with an amp designer to build a special amp as a clone of a Fender Deluxe with the 5E3 circuit. This amp has the classic Fender sound found on so many records from its era.”


What’s your favourite gear?

“I love running my AKG C214 large-diaphragm condenser microphone into my Universal Audio Twin-Finity 710 preamp.”

How is the studio used?

“I’ve worked with local professional musicians on both audio and video projects. I still work as a mechanical engineer, so audio engineering is part time at the moment. I hope to gain more clients and continue to develop my skills and my reputation as a quality engineer, and eventually become a go-to for high-level audio production.”

What’s on your wishlist?

“I’m looking to start getting out of the box, and considering the Warm Audio WA76. This is a reproduction of the classic 1176 compressor. I’m also interested in the Warm Audio reproductions of the LA-2A and Pultec EQ.”

What’s your dream gear?

“A real LA-2A compressor would be nice.”

Any advice for our readers?

“I feel it’s important to work with an artist to understand their vision. The end goal is to provide a product that they can be proud to say they recorded in my studio.”
