Tell us more about the studio, Yaniv.

“alt Studio” is one of the few commercial recording studios in Israel, and definitely the biggest one in size. The complex is located in Afula – a peripheral city in the north of Israel and operates 3 production rooms and one huge live room (80 square meters in size).


The studio was designed for live recording. The live room (with acoustic design by John H. Brandt) provides the opportunity of recording a large number of musicians in the same room with close to zero leakage to other microphones in the room. This concept allows musicians to see, feel and inspire each other while recording.

A good example would be a session we recorded a few months ago with an Israeli rock band, including nine players plus 65 people in the room as an audience – recording a live album together. It was an unusual and exciting experience for everyone involved.

Which DAW do you use and why?

Pro Tools HDX. Most of the time I am tracking and mixing. I find Pro Tools to be the best for that purpose. I believe that today for producing music all of the DAW׳s are pretty much the same, but for sound technicians, Pro Tools is still in first place.

What is your favourite piece of gear and why?

Merging Anubis. Everything changed since we started using Merging products. The way that emotions are converted into signals just leaves me speechless.
The way you hear every detail and the dynamics of the system is just “WOW!”.

How much time do you spend in your studio per week?


I basically live here!

How do you use your studio?

Most of the time I am doing tracking of acoustic instruments, we already have recorded 22 musicians simultaneously in the same room. Moreover, we recorded a full band with 80 people in the crowd. We operate a professional remote drum recording service which means we record for people abroad in our facility and sound. Other than that I am mixing and producing in the other production rooms.

What is next on your shopping list studio-wise and why?

SM7B – because you always need one more.

Do you have any frustrations with your current set-up and why?

DB25 Connectors! It’s annoying to weld these connectors.

What is your dream piece of gear and why?

A STOCK of U47s. And when I say stock I mean like 10 or more units.

What is your top piece of production advice?

Don’t believe that you can fix it in the mix.

What is the one piece of advice you would give someone starting out building a studio?

I will recommend understanding what your goal is. People want a studio at home and will spend a fortune on equipment and acoustics, they will spend time learning how to produce and mix in their environment and waste a lot of resources ( money and time ) and most of the time the results won’t be as satisfying as the product they can achieve in a professional studio. So my advice is if you just want to make demos for your songs, buy a cheap mic and a sound card, record guides and spend the money that you saved on working in a studio and with professional staff.
