Bitwig Studio 3.2 introduces new sound sculpting possibilities
EQ+ and Saturator join the Bitwig arsenal, along with a host of other free updates.
As a free update, Bitwig Studio 3.2 aims to offer new ways for you to “colour your sound”, with new sound-shaping tools, improvements to existing effects and workflows, plus a new preset package.
EQ+ is a new graphic equalizer offering eight bands, colourful visualisation, new mouse gestures and new algorithms. The rainbow colour spectrum on the EQ curve – which you’ll also find in EQ-2 and EQ-5 – offers some visual aid in your frequency processing. Bitwig says that this approach to EQing can create a “sonic muscle memory”, by connecting sounds with visualisation. EQ+ features 14 filter options, up to eight bands and an Adaptive-Q to narrow the width of the bands as their gain increases.
Another new feature is the ability to select a Reference track and see if as a purple curve in the spectrum display. This can be useful if you’re trying to stop tracks clashing in certain parts of the spectrum. You can also solo individual bands in the editor for a more precise configuration. Bitwig’s new Saturator is designed to add buzz, rumble and warmth to your instruments. The curve is visualised on a high-level panel display, so you can see how you’re affecting the sound. Drive, gain normalise, low-pass controls and a makeup gain can lighten the saturation or turn it into a dynamic processor.
Arpeggiator gets some new controls for velocity and note length, plus a pitch control on each step which functions “like step sequencing new patterns on top of the notes being held” Bitwig says. Some new arpeggiation shapes have been added, too, plus an Octave Behavior option, which adds more pattern and sonic variations to your parts.
Bitwig Studio’s Instrument Selector, Note FX Selector, and audio FX Selector have all gained voice modes for triggering different layers. Whether each note of a chord needs a slightly different preset or a totally different VST, these modes will handle the details without any fuss.
Bitwig Studio 3.2 brings a vast range of other improvements, proving to be quite a comprehensive update. This comes with Bitwig’s Evolving Sounds and Sequences package. Created in alliance with Polarity and the Joerg Sunderkoetter, 68 new presets have arrived, each bringing inevitable motion and a range of possibilities.
