Modular synthesis has gained a reputation for being addictive. And an addiction to ‘Eurocrack’ can be very expensive. However, Cherry Audio’s virtual modular system Voltage Modular could be the affordable toe in the water for those wanting to get into modular without breaking the bank.
Also, with the new version 2.0 update, Voltage Modular looks more powerful than ever.
Major updates include unlimited patches per jack for endlessly complicated routings; a bus routing system, randomisation for all modules, patch variations, one-button cable visibility mode, a MIDI file player and a built-in 32-bit audio recorder for capturing your sonic meanderings.
Along with these new features come some fresh and updated modules, too. Among the notable new modules are:
- DCO-60 – a polyphonic semi-modular synth that seems to be based on the Roland Juno 60
- SynthVoice – a semi-modular synth voice that appears to be based on the Rev3 ARP Odyssey
- AirStep, AirVector, AirWave and PolyAirWave – based on wavetable and vector synthesis
Polyphony is the other big move in this version, with basic and Moog/Korg-inspired oscillators and filters now supporting polyphonic operation.
Cherry Audio Voltage Modular 2 is free to current users. It comes in three versions: Nucleus, Ignite and Core + Electro Drums, priced at $29, $50 and $99 respectively.
