Cloud preview the next edition of Cloudlifter
Cloudlifter ZX2 provides new parameters for mic gain boosting.
Cloud Microphones is known for its Cloudlifter, a gain boosting tool for microphones. At AES 2019, Cloud exhibited the Cloudlifter ZX2, which offers a set of parameters to add console character and presence to your microphone’s signal before processing. The ZX2 comes in rackmount format, offering two channels to plug into.
With Cloudlifter ZX2, impedance loading can be adjusted using the ‘Z’ button on the front of the rack, which changes the tonal character of the signal. A high pass filter can be applied, with cutoff frequency, changing frequency in line with the impedance loader.
The ‘X’ button is a transformer, selectable between X1 and X2 modes, which is a microphone input transformer, similar to that found in Quad Eight consoles. X1 will provide presence at around 5-7kHz and allowing for up to a gain boost of 45dB. X2 has a presence peak, rolling off gently at 3dB and 20kHz, which the company says is “a little darker, great for an SM57 in a guitar cabinet”.
