Get darker with Wraith, a synth for pads, drones and textures.

Frozen Plain has teamed up with cinematic sound designer Carlos Butler to introduce a dark ambient and cinematic sound design plug-in, Wraith. The synthesiser is housed in Mirage, a sampler engine developed by Frozen Plain which offers three independent audio layers and an effects rack. The company has described Wraith as “an ideal sound design tool for creating atmospheres, backgrounds and tension.”

The Mirage sample engine allows you to load in three layers of Wraith (or any other Frozen Plain plug-in) to blend and manipulate, with seven effects to add to the sound, with distortion, bit crush, compressor, chorus, reverb, delay and convolution reverb. You can control your sounds with envelopes, filters, EQ, LFO and crossfade functions. A quick overview is available below:

Wraith is packed with 230 samples and 80 presets, each organised into one of three categories: Drones, Tonal and Textures.

Drones and Tonal comprise most of the expansion, which cater to those looking for quick solutions to complex scenes and soundscapes, featuring “gritty low-end, rich drones full of depth and granular harmonic content”, according to Frozen Plain. The Textures folder can be used to glue together sounds from the former categories to create more complex sounds, or substitute a layer for further experimentation.

Beyond just samples, Wraith can be controlled with MIDI CC, velocity and a sustain pedal. Randomising features allow for further versatility in creating new and complex sounds.

Wraith is currently only available for Windows, but is compatible with any DAW that can host VST2. Check out the demo video below:
