Apple announced the third generation of AirPods at its Unleashed event yesterday (18 October) with major updates in this version being spatial audio support, Adaptive EQ, longer listening times and a fresh contoured design.

AirPods 3 takes design cues from the AirPods Pro, featuring shorter stems and a rounder earpiece. They feature a custom driver and a high dynamic range amplifier which Apple says will dramatically improve overall sound quality.

Adaptive EQ, powered by computational audio and an inward-facing microphone to monitor sound, will tune playback to the way AirPods fit in the listeners ear. It’s a real-time process which is said to ensure low and mid frequencies are reproduced at their best.

The latest AirPods also support spatial audio via Dolby Atmos and dynamic head tracking, so music, movies, TV shows and even video calls are “more immersive” than before.

Listening time has been extended to 6 hours on a full charge, an hour more than the second-gen AirPods provided. There’s also fast charging, where a five-minute juice-up provides about an hour of battery life. Meanwhile, the new charging case now offers four full charges, bringing battery life to a total of 30 hours.

One-touch setup automatically pairs AirPods with all of your Apple devices. Meanwhile, the Audio Sharing feature lets audio be streamed to two sets of AirPods, AirPods Pro, or AirPods Max on certain devices.

The latest AirPods are now sweat and water-resistant, with a rating of IPX4 on both the earbuds and the charging case. It also supports MagSafe and wireless charging.

AirPods 3 are available for pre-order now at £169 / $179 a pair. They’ll be available in-store on 26 October.
