Tech solutions to music learning are all the rage. Between ROLI’s recent announcement of LUMI and Melodics’ ongoing quest to create better playing habits, there’s already serious competition in the arena.

But start-up ForteRight, are offering something different. And you can use it with your existing keyboard. The product is Arcade and it’s just launched on Kickstarter.

The hardware device is a foldable 88-key piano trainer designed to teach beginners piano through video-game-like visuals. Controlled by a companion mobile app, Arcade displays cascading colourful LED bars that show you where and when to hit the keys. The device’s gamification, according to ForteRight, “smooths the learning curve for beginners and makes the process fun”.

The companion ForteRight App lets you stream visual lessons wirelessly and load music scores from an online library – no physical scores or page-turning required. Before jumping into a song proper, you’ll be able to interact with it through Practice Mode, which breaks down the piece into parts for each hand individually.

The next step after Practice Mode is to play the song in real-time. While you’re playing, the companion app tracks factors such as note accuracy, timing and playing smoothness – indicators to help you pinpoint areas for improvement.

Other neat features included by ForteRight include MIDI support, iOS and Android compatibility as well as warm-up exercises.
