Billy Cardigan, one half of the eclectic performance group Shy Boyz, has penned and illustrated a children’s book about the joys of synth collecting, titled My Daddy Has 100 Synths.

My Daddy Has 100 Synths is told from the perspective of a child, as their father shows off and explains some of the most wonderful pieces from his synth collection (all of them, apparently).

Written in the style of Dr Seuss and accompanied with colourful art, the book is a follow-up to Cardigan’s My Daddy Has 100 Guitar Pedals, which seems to centre around the same flannel-wearing, GAS-afflicted father figure.

“This one is polyphonic and has a vocoder! This one was used by Giorgio Moroder,” he explains to the child in an excerpt. “This is the classic Minimoog, used by Kraftwerk and Depeche Mode.”

My Daddy Has 100 Synths is Cardigan’s second book about music gear for children, but it’s not the YouTube host and Shy Boyz member’s first piece of literary work. Previously he also wrote Obtuse Chambers a short story collection about guitar pedals.

Cardigan says this is “the world’s first fully illustrated children’s book about synthesizers”, and is available now for $15.
