Sensel Express MPE

NAMM 2021: Sensel, the creator of the quirky Morph MPE controller, is giving away a pack of 40 presets to get expressive with your software and hardware synths.

The Express MPE pack comprises 40 presets for Xfer Serum, Arturia Pigments, Bitwig Studio, Audio Damage Quanta, Madrona Labs Aalto and Kaivo, and the Ashun Sound Machines Hydrasynth. Sensel says there are at least five presets per synth, with sounds that are soft and textural to bold leads and experimental percussion.

These presets should be an ideal starting point to get creative with MPE. You can learn how to map pitch bend, glide and pressure within each soft synth and the Hydrasynth hardware. MPE is rapidly becoming more ubiquitous, so it’s a good idea to pull apart these presets and learn the potential of the format.

MPE (MIDI Polyphonic Expression) allows for a more nuanced performance with synths and virtual instruments. Parameters such as pitch bend, glide, filter cutoff and more can be altered on each individual note. This is achieved with MPE-equipped controllers and compatible DAWs and instruments.

MPE-ready hosts include Bitwig, Live 11, Studio One, Logic Pro and Cubase. There are many MPE controllers available now, too, such as Sensel’s Morph and products by ROLI, Artiphon and Linnstrument.
