Modal Electronics has launched the 2.0 firmware update for the Skulpt, bringing MPE compatibility to the compact device to make it “now the most affordable MPE polyphonic hardware synth on the market,” according to the brand.
Along with this, the firmware update also introduces feature updates to the device’s arpeggiator and improves the Skulpt’s ability to integrate with external hardware.
With MPE support, each MIDI note can be assigned its own MIDI channel. This lets the device take advantage of the MIDI articulation found on controllers such as the Roli Seaboard for further expression in performance.
The arpeggiator has been expanded with a new Sustain/Arp Latch Mode, which functions as a classic arp hold even when the integrated arpeggiator isn’t engaged.
Skulpt’s pitch can now be adjusted with a Global Tune setting to better accommodate the less precisely ‘tuned’ nature of analogue equipment. This could be used to integrate the device with an analogue DJ setup or a modular synth rig.
Lastly, MIDI-In Offset is a new global setting that automatically configures the range of each patch without the need to fiddle with an external controller’s octave settings.
The firmware update is available through Modal Electronics’ MODALapp, which also received a 2.5.0 update for improved stability.
