Soundbrenner has drawn the curtains back on the Core, a smartwatch for musicians. The gizmo is packed with features designed for music-making, whether it’s a vibrating metronome, chromatic tuning or interacting with your DAW.
Vibrating metronome that syncs with other devices
Based on Soundbrenner’s first product, the Pulse, the Core’s metronome keeps time via vibrations instead of audible clicks—and the vibrations are seven times stronger than what you usually get with smartwatches, so you don’t have to worry about missing a beat.
The metronome can also synchronise with up to 10 other devices via Bluetooth, which means your entire band can stay locked in sync together via the Core. You can also tweak the metronome’s settings with the Soundbrenner mobile app, available for both iOS and Android.
Magnetic contact tuner compatible with various instruments
The Core can be used to tune a variety of instruments, from guitar to ukulele to violin. All you have to do is twist the watch off from its base and magnetically attach it to your instrument’s metal tuning pegs (or the contact piece provided by Soundbrenner). The chromatic tuner detects micro-vibrations using its in-built piezo contact mic and guides you to the right note using an eight-section LED ring colour guide. You can also select different standard pitch frequencies between 430Hz to 450Hz, at 1Hz increments.
The Core connects to most DAWs with MIDI over Bluetooth compatibility, allowing users to sync the watch to backing tracks when performing. You can also map the buttons, wheel and capacitive taps of the watch to any action in the DAW.
It’s still a watch
And at the end of the day, the Core is still a handy smartwatch. It can receive push notifications for texts, calls, alarms and reminders from your smartphone, and shows you the time and date. As for battery life, the Core lasts up to three days on a full charge, with 30 minutes of daily play time of the vibrating metronome. Charge it with a magnetic charging cable and a USB port. It’s also worth noting the watch’s IP66 water and dust protection rating.
