Spitfire Audio’s latest instrument pack is dedicated to the cinematic sounds of the Cimbalom, a type of dulcimer played with hammers.
Cimbalom – the latest addition to Spitfire’s Originals series – was performed by veteran percussionist Greg Knowles, whose TV and film work spans The Golden Compass, Band Of Brothers and both the Harry Potter and Lord Of The Rings film series.
The recording sessions for Cimbalom took place at AIR Studios in London where engineers used a combination of close mics and a decca tree array. In the virtual instrument, these microphone signals can be blended to achieve your ideal sound.
There are also five preset modes to choose from: performance, short damped, short sustained, tremolo and warp. The last of these is processed with envelopes and additional layers of audio for pad-like tones. On top of that, you get attack and release parameters, plus an in-built reverb.

Spitfire Audio’s Cimbalom is available at £29.
