Caelum Audio has launched Tape Cassette 2 in VST3, AU and AUv3 formats, emulating the character of old tape cassettes in your projects for free.

With genres like lo-fi hip-hop and lo-fi house skyrocketing in popularity in the last few years, it’s no surprise that producers are looking for tape emulation plug-ins to use in their DAW. The Wow and Flutter of tape machines warp the pitch and speed of audio signals, which is put to the extreme in these genres. Combine this with the grit and warmth of tape machines and you’ll end up with some pretty interesting results. Thankfully, these features are emulated in Caelum Audio’s Tape Cassette 2.

Not only does Tape Cassette 2 rebuild its predecessor’s Wow and Flutter engines, but the saturation algorithm gets an improvement too. A brand new selectable Type 1 Cassette Impulse Response comes to the plug-in, with real sampled tape noise, resulting in a more genuine vintage sound.

Two new VU meters are now onboard to monitor your audio, plus selectable oversampling up to 16x. Tape Cassette 2’s low-pass filter now goes from 5kHz up to 22kHz. This could be an ideal tape saturation plug-in for your entire project, or across individual channels.

Downloading the plug-in will require you to create an account with Caelum Audio and input the activation key the website supplies you with. The free tape emulation plug-in is available in VST3 and AU for PC and Mac, as well as AUv3 for iOS.
