FRMS rolls granular, subtractive and FM synthesis into one synth plug-in

With four layers of synthesis per voice for complex, evolving, glitchy textures.

[UPDATE, 16/04/20 – Due to the current COVID-19 pandemic, Imaginado has extended the introductory offer for FRMS until 30 April.]

Imaginado’s latest software synthesiser packs three synth engines (granular, FM, subtractive) with four layers per voice, and up to eight voices of polyphony. FRMS also gives you four LFOs, each with five modes, two envelope generators per layer, one modulation matrix per layer and one filter per layer with a master filter. Plus, you can then send each layer to delay and reverb effects. Simply put, you may never find yourself short on options when designing new, complex sounds. And, best of all, the synth is available across macOS, iOS, Windows and Android.

You can load in sounds to the granular engine from FRMS’ built-in sample library, or record audio in directly. The FM engine is comprised of four operators with eight modes, plus the ability to use a layer as an operator. This means you can use the granular engine as an operator, or run the subtractive synth into the FM section to get experimental sounds. The subtractive engine itself features four waveforms and five filters.

Layers in FRMS allow you to get weird and creative in your sound design, thanks to cross-modulation capabilities. You can use oscillators to modulate grains in the granular engine and combine multiple engines to create complex patches.

You can use FRMS in two performance modes, Keyboard and Chorder; the latter naturally helps you play chords instantly. There’s also MPE support for a more expressive performance and Ableton Link is supported to hook up to other music-making apps.

FRMS is available now for Windows, macOS, iOS and Android at an introductory price of €59, with an €11.90 rent-to-own option for a year. Find out more at imaginado.pt
