Bandcamp has officially entered the ticketed live stream arena. Bandcamp Live will let artists host virtual gigs and set their own price for admission.

The service integrates with artist pages to streamline reach to fans and also help maximise profits from each show. Followers will be notified as soon as a show is announced and purchasers of tickets automatically become followers of an artist (if they aren’t already doing so).

At the show, artists will be able to showcase their music and merchandise with a virtual merch table. Furthermore, an optional chat will allow fans, artists (or their moderators) to discuss the show as it happens.

On the subject of pricing, Bandcamp says that its new service will be “transparent” and won’t “surprise your fans with a ‘convenience fee’”. Bandcamp’s slice of the pie is set at 10 per cent for each show; however, the company will not start charging its fee until 31 March 2021.

The service rolled out today (18 November) and follows an announcement made through a blog post. A statement explained that Bandcamp Live is the website’s latest effort to empower artists amid the coronavirus pandemic.

“Streaming will never replace the experience of in-person performances, but we believe it’s the next best thing,” reads the statement. “[Bandcamp Live] will provide artists with a powerful tool to build and connect with their fans both now, and when Covid is behind us and we’re all out enjoying the magic of live music once again.”

To launch and demonstrate the live streaming service, Bandcamp also announced a handful of shows to take place with Bandcamp Live. Artists performing include the likes of Madison McFerrin, Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith, Moaning and Cloud Nothings.
