After rolling out free copies of Ozone 8 Elements, iZotope has fulfilled its promise of releasing Ozone 9, the next version of its mastering suite. This release comes with a slight twist, though – while available for outright purchase, iZotope has collaborated with Splice to offer a Rent-to-Own option. This was made available for its predecessor, Ozone 8, and for the first time ever will support Rent-to-Own upgrades. Therefore, if you were on the Rent-to-Own programme with Ozone 8, you can upgrade to Ozone 9 whilst continuing to pay the same monthly fee.
Ozone 9 has expanded on its Master Assistant, which was featured in Ozone 8, which uses machine learning to create a custom preset in a short amount of time. It comes with a new Vintage mode, which provides automatic adjustments for Vintage EQ, Vintage Limiter and more, designed to help users to find the right colour and character for their tracks. The Master Assistant can intelligently set the loudness to meet CD or streaming platform standards, as well as the flexibility to match the intensity of a user-selected reference track.
Master Rebalance is introduced with Ozone 9, which allows users to make changes in levels to bass, drums and vocals in real-time, without having to delve into the original mix. Users can add presence to vocals without affecting the midrange, whilst also not changing the dynamics of other sources. iZotope have provided a video of this feature in action, which you can find below.
Also new is Low End Focus, which is designed to tackle unwanted muddy and low-end frequencies in a mix. The new processing is “designed to enhance bass sound, bring clarity to a users’ low end and give a well-defined foundation for each track” iZotope say. Low End Focus can be used to deal with clashing kick drums and bass tones, without changing the overall impact, with in-depth controls that can shape tone and timbre.
Ozone 9 improves on Tonal Balance Control, its Match EQ, and overall performance, minimizing CPU usage. The UI has also been updated in an effort to simplify interaction with the mastering suite, featuring a resizable interface, fluid metering and expanded module chain.
