If you’re a Logic Pro X user, you may have caught wind about yesterday’s major update to Apple’s DAW, now at version 10.5. More interesting news follows today, with the announcement of support for Novation Launchpad in Logic Pro X 10.5, which is no doubt in part due to the arrival of Live Loops, the DAW’s new clip launching window.
Launchpad’s renowned colourful 8×8 grid offers cell-based looping playback and performance to Logic Pro, bringing a more hands-on experience to music production. Working in tandem with Live Loops, Launchpad is able to trigger sounds within the DAW, whether it’s one-shot samples, loops, MIDI patterns or automation data. With an intuitive drag-and-drop approach, sounds can be quickly assigned to a cell or recorded directly from an external input, and then arranged into an entire rack.
An automatic setup makes this partnership a breeze – plugging in any compatible Launchpad will prompt Logic’s Control Surface Setup to notify you of a connection. You then just need to rotate the Launchpad 90 degrees to match the Live Loops grid layout.
Those with several Launchpad’s in their arsenal will be pleased to know that multiple devices can be used with Logic Pro X simultaneously, with additional options for the top-down orientation of your devices. You’ll always need to rotate each launchpad 90 degrees to the right or left to match Live Loops’ layout, though.
Speaking on the release, Novation says: “Launchpad has become the de facto device for live performers, experimental musicians and anybody wanting to make music out of the confines of a linear timeline. Logic’s Live Loops feature is designed for exactly these creators, and helps get ideas down fast. Even before Live Loops, Launchpad was a close partner to Logic users: either as a programmable pad of triggers, buttons and virtual faders, or in note mode as an expressive grid-based MIDI controller. Now, with Live Loops, Launchpad is an integral part of the Logic Pro X journey”.
