Deep House Stabs

The last year has seen deep house leap from the underground and into the charts, with acts like Disclosure and Duke Dumont securing top 10 slots. The stacked-chord synth stab is a staple of the modern deep house sound, often based around a single, fixed chord shape played rhythmically in a sampler. Synth master Richard James has dusted off his Juno 60 and Access Virus to craft an exclusive pack of 140 deep and effected stabs in a variety of keys and chord shapes. The majority of the hits have fairly long reverb tails, so play with the envelopes if you need tighter sounds.

Lounge & Chillout

Equinox Sounds is here to help inspire new track ideas with another collection of MIDI loops for creating a wide variety of slow-tempo music styles such as chillout, lounge and downtempo. You’ll find five kits in total divided into folders, with individual loops for bass, drums, piano, bells, strings and pads alongside more esoteric instruments.

Each kit and file is labelled with key and tempo, but of course these are just suggestions, as you can tweak and edit to your heart’s content in your DAW of choice.

TR-8, TB-3 & Modular Synths

If you read our exclusive review of Roland’s TR-8 and TB-3 in last month’s issue and are hungry for more, we’ve got two great videos courtesy of Point Blank Music School of tutor Paul Crossman exploring both units. Crossman focuses on the presets, effects and performance controls, hooking up both instruments to play alongside each other. There’s also a modular synth masterclass taken from LEAF 2013, which sees Mute Records founder and electronic music legend Daniel Miller discuss the current resurgence in modular synths and program some sounds on his own system.
