Grimes Native Instruments

Berlin-based gear manufacturer, Native Instruments, has opened up its doors to a new remix competition, starring Grimes – and you. Every entrant will receive a $25 voucher to use in the Native Instruments store, plus a month of free loops and samples from Sound.com. A few bigger prizes might pique your interest a little more though…

Keeping a level playing field, Native Instruments has said “in the spirit of DIY creation, there will be no judging”. Instead, the overall winner will be selected at complete random, and will win newly-released software from NI for the next year. A further five winners will each receive Maschine Mk3 and Komplete Kontrol S49, plus a chance for participants to win a copy of Komplete 12 every week.

Grimes’ new track, You’ll Miss Me When I’m Not Around is the track you get to remix and upload to Metapop, Native Instruments’ community platform. Grimes herself grew up on bootleg sampling and DIY creation, and according to NI ”considers it a vital part of exploring personal style and creativity – and the goal of this project is simply to get people creating”.

A video for You’ll Miss Me When I’m Not Around was uploaded by Grimes last week, as part of her acclaimed album Miss Anthropocene, and invited anyone to mix during the COVID-19 pandemic. In a post on Instagram, she added, “Because we’re all in lockdown, we thought if people are bored and wanna learn new things, we could release the raw components of one of these for anyone who wants to try making stuff using our footage.” You can also get the green screen footage and she will soon be making the visual tools she uses accessible to all, as she details in the YouTube music video description.

Remix uploads are now open and close on May 22nd. Enter at metapop.com
