If you’re in need of new sounds while self-isolating, it looks like SampleScience has you covered. Having already released several plug-ins over the last few weeks, the brand is back with version 2 of Toy Keyboard, a free ROMpler based on the Yamaha PSR-78.
Toy Keyboard v2 packs 72 sounds and a drum kit, with multiple modulation routing possibilities and onboard effects. Remarkably, the plug-in only weighs in at 39MB, with all its samples playing back as 16bit/44.1kHz mono WAV files.
As well as a multi-LFO to add flair to your sounds, you can also deploy a room reverb, high-pass/low-pass filter and control of amplitude with the usual ADSR parameters. Toy Keyboard v2 is playable in three voice modes: polyphonic, monophonic and legato.
“All the sounds have been sampled and looped when appropriate”, SampleScience says. “To keep the plugin light, each sound contains only one sample stretched over the keyboard.
“The C3 note has been sampled for each sound, but in some cases, you’ll hear a different note (C1 or C2). To respect the original mapping of the PSR-78, [SampleScience] decided to keep the C1 and C2 notes to C3”
Toy Keyboard v2 is available as an AU/VST plug-in, compatible with Windows 7 and up, or macOS High Sierra/Mojave/Catalina. Although it is a free piece of software, it’s been labelled by the brand as Donationware, so if you believe the hard-working software developer deserves some cash for its efforts, you can name your own fair price.
