When Spitfire Audio launched the ambitious BBC Symphony Orchestra plug-in back in 2019, the brand claimed that this was “just the beginning”. Now, we’ve grasped what that actually means, with the introduction of Discover, Core and Pro versions of Spitfire Audio’s BBC Symphony Orchestra. In the search for the next generation of innovative orchestral composers, Spitfire Audio aims to bring orchestral sounds to absolutely anyone.

Discovery

The biggest talking point is Discover, which bundles in an impressive array of sounds with a charmingly low collective file size of 200mb. Even lower than that is the price tag of Discover: £49 / €49 / $49. Best of all, a significant percentage of revenue from the product will pay the musicians involved in its creation.

Fulfilling its goal of making this accessible to all who desire it, Spitfire Audio is offering out Discover for free to those with smaller budgets willing to fill out a questionnaire and wait two weeks to receive it.

Discover boasts 35 instruments and 47 articulations in one mix signal, with compatibility across all DAWs with Spitfire’s free compatibility plug-in. The interface is similar to that of Spitfire’s LABS plug-in, which can host a collection of the brand’s free plug-ins.

Mode change

Spitfire’s mode changing technology provides easy collaboration across different versions of BBCSO. No matter what version fellow composers have, you’ll be able to share instruments and pieces. This could make Discover a useful tool for composers writing on the go, or with a basic tech setup, or even in an educational environment. Once a piece is created in Discover, they can be transferred and completed in Pro or Core versions.

Speaking on the release, CEO Will Evans of Spitfire Audio said: “We are excited to be expanding our collaboration with the BBC Symphony Orchestra, an organisation which shares our values of innovation, accessibility and musical excellence. This partnership means that anyone can access a world-class orchestra through our award-winning standalone plugin. More than that, it represents a new standard for orchestral sample libraries, – allowing aspiring composers old and new to create incredible new music from a range of professionally created sounds and tools. We will be supporting our community of users with new unique resources, online content, events and more to take orchestral music forward into the future”.
