Spotify has found a new way to encourage fans to engage with their artists on the platform: GIFs. The streaming giant has teamed up with GIPHY to embed artist Spotify pages into GIFs and allow users to discover new music.

GIFs are a popular feature of instant messaging apps such as Instagram, WhatsApp, Messenger, Snapchat and more, with GIPHY being one of the integrated databases among them. With the new Spotify-linked GIFs, users can send looped clips of Doja Cat, The Weeknd, Post Malone, Nicki Minaj, The Kid LAROI and Conan Gray and be taken to their respective Spotify pages with a single tap. More artists are expected to arrive soon.
Although GIPHY can be used within some apps already, it appears Spotify GIFs aren’t available via supported apps. Instead, users will have to head to GIPHY.com or GIPHY’s mobile apps to locate the artist’s official GIPHY channel and share a GIF from there. Once the suitable clip for the conversation has been found, users can tap the “Listen On Spotify” button and can be taken to the artist’s Spotify page.
It’s not exactly streamlined right now, but perhaps the two companies are envisioning a time in which GIFs shared from any platform can essentially be monetised with a Spotify link. Spotify says that this is part of a wider partnership with GIPHY, which suggests that we may see more interactive features come to fruition.
The new feature arrives as users await the launch of Spotify HiFi. The high-fidelity listening tier has been in the works since early 2021, and various leaks have suggested that the service is about to drop.
