Steinberg VST 3.7

The latest version of the Virtual Studio Technology (VST) Software Developer Kit (SDK) has been made available by Steinberg. VST 3.7 offers enhancements to host applications, audio plug-ins and virtual instruments, as new possibilities are open to the developers. New to VST is the VST 3 Project Generator, support for MIDI 2.0 and the development of plug-ins compatible with the new ARM-based Apple Silicon chips, among other improvements.

With VST 3.7, the VST 3 Project Generator lets users create a VST 3 plug-in “with just a few clicks”, according to Steinberg. These plug-ins can then be used as the code skeleton in Xcode or Visual Studio. This seemingly comes in an effort to encourage new developers into the VST development arena.

As MIDI 2.0 makes its way into the world, it seems right that the VST format develops in tandem. Although MIDI 2.0 is already supported by VST 3, the VST 3.7 SDK features detailed documentation on how to integrate MIDI 2.0 enhancements with plug-ins.

The improved SDK documentation can be viewed in its entirety online. It also includes information on how to develop plug-ins with tutorials for developers of all levels.

Arne Scheffler, senior software engineer for VST at Steinberg says of the update: “VST is built on the ideas and creativity of the global creative community. We want to lower the entry barrier for the next generations of VST developers, and we can’t wait to see what they come up with.”

The SDK can be used under free license and is available for download now. Find out more at developer.steinberg.help
