Unity Audio launches the Mini-Boulder and Mini-Boulder DSP monitors

The three-way active monitor is a compact version of the Boulder MK-III

Unity Audio adds to its family of geologically named professional active studio monitors with the Mini-Boulder and Mini-Boulder DSP. It’s older sibling, the Boulder-MKIII, is the foundation for this monitor, with just one eight-inch woofer, as opposed to two.

The Mini-Boulder three way active design still shares the “exact same electronics and mid/high frequency coaxial driver from our larger Boulder Mk-III model”, Unity Audio says. This includes the Coaxial five-inch ring mid-range driver and 50kHz folded ribbon tweeter, which delivers point source, phase accurate audio across several octaves. This is possible thanks to the tweeter being mounted inside the five-inch ring mid-range driver.

Mini-Boulder’s single eight-inch woofer is built with an extremely solid aluminium cone, which offers “tremendous bass precision” according to Unity Audio. The cone and the low loss rubber surround eliminates cone edge resonance and distortion often associated with soft cone designs. The 300W, Class D amplifier runs the eight-inch woofer, with two custom Unity Audio 100W Class A/B amps for the Coaxial mid-range and tweeter. Unity Audio says this lets the Mini-Boulder “deliver a life-like sense of scale”.

In usual Unity Audio style, the 18mm Baltic Birch plywood cabinet is a sealed enclosure, without the need for a resonate port to deliver the lower frequencies. This design choice is to present a more accurate bass response, coupled with better time domain performance. Plus, it offers a gradual 12dB per octave roll off, as opposed to a 24dB ported roll off design.

The sealed cabinet also guarantees a super-fast transient response, which lets the user hear the details in a sound’s initial attack and its full transient characteristics. Monitoring at low levels doesn’t compromise low frequency performance, either, thanks to the cabinet design, meaning you can work for longer periods of time at moderate listening levels.

Mini-Boulder DSP is built with the same DSP hardware and software found in other Unity Audio DSP models. A 24bit/96kHz A/D conversion performance is coupled with a flexible eight-band EQ, 1/10th dB gain resolution and preset library/storage. The DSP software is compatible for both Mac and PC and is controlled over a sealed Neutrik Cat5 rear panel connector.

Prices for both models are as follows:

  • Mini-Boulder £4,990 pair ex-VAT
  • Mini-Boulder DSP £5,390 pair ex-VAT
