After three years of waiting, producers will soon be able to have a Behringer RD-9 in their studio. The brand announced that the TR-909-inspired drum machine is shipping now, sharing a photo from the production line.

Behringer said on its Facebook post that production has “taken much longer than we had anticipated but Covid plus the current global supply chain challenges didn’t make it easier”. The post also says that this final version of the RD-9 is an entirely new design compared to old iterations, sporting modern performance and sound-shaping features.

Although it’s not yet possible to order an RD-9 from Behringer’s online store, or from any of its Super Partners, it’s expected to be available very soon. Behringer has kept hush about the exact release date and apologised to its followers on social media for the wait. The brand also says, however, that it may take some time to fill the backlog of orders.

The price of the RD-9 is also a mystery. However, Behringer’s TR-808-inspired drum machine, the RD-8, sits at around £270, and the RD-9 will likely cost slightly more. Behringer’s ethos is to make music technology gear more accessible to producers on a budget.

In January 2021, Behringer updated its followers on the progress of the RD-9, sharing some of the new features that it boasts. This includes an authentic mode that keeps drum sounds true to the original TR-909 kit using Behringer’s analogue custom-made components. Additionally, users can alter hi-hat and bass drum pitch and pitch depth and hook up the RD-9 to their rig with ample connectivity options.
