Review: Audio Technica ATH-PRO7X

They don’t look and feel as expensive as they should, but the excellent sound almost makes up for these drawbacks.

When reviewing DJ headphones, there are a few immediate considerations; loudness, comfort, durability, and of course, how they sound. Now the order of these scrutinies depends on your particular preference when DJing. Do you take your headphones on and off throughout the gig? Do you need to monitor at high volume? Do you often use a single ear? And so on… But we’ll try to consider all variants in this review.

Firstly, the sound is really fantastic. It’s open in its imaging, with really fast, punchy mids and crisp tops that are never too fizzy or fatiguing during long sessions. Importantly, they deliver this sound consistently even up to extremely high volumes.

The headphones have a metal construction that is light to wear and provides a larger on-ear design than say the Sennheiser HD-25’s. Their driver is 4mm larger, too, at 45mm. The overall feel is a little plastic though and despite having the robust metal band running through, they still don’t seem ‘luxury’ or particularly sturdy.

For this reason, the ATH-PRO7X’s wouldn’t be a sensible purchase for a DJ or performer that takes their headphones on and off during their sets. These headphones are much more suited to being left alone. If you perform with one ear off, they work well – the cups flex around while still sitting comfortably on the head and on both ears.

The earpads and headband are particularly comfortable and soft but it’s hard to tell whether the material used for the padding will start to flake off after months of sweaty gigs, as many headphones tend to do.

Although A-T includes two cables, the connecting end at the headphones has a 2.5mm jack with a custom rotating lock design. This does make it secure, but it also means you’ll have to spend £14 for a replacement, should the time come.

These wouldn’t be my first choice as DJ headphones as I generally prefer something more robust and with reversible housing. But I loved the sound, and they are the perfect headphones for set-prep and long listening sessions. At this price point, though, they have a lot of competition.
