In the fourth and final episode of our mini-series, Wired Masters’ Cass Irvine shows us a trick for making the perfect kick for your dance music track. Although not usually the job of a mastering engineer, Cass roles up his sleeves and build a new kick that sits better in the track.
He has a particular technique that helps him make a kick sit in any track. By combining the attack of one sample with the decay of another, it’s possible to design the perfect kick. This technique gives you the option to alter the tuning of the kick decay separate to the attack, so that it doesn’t conflict with the music. The approach also allows you to trim or lengthen the decay to the exact length that you want it, to sit in the track.
