Welcome to Point Blank Music School’s new weekly spot here on Music Tech, where we’ll be sharing our extensive production knowledge and offering up useful plug-ins for free!

This week we’re sharing a brand new Max For Live device, created by one of our very own expert tutors, Daniel Herbert. After releasing several of our very own M4L updates for Ableton Live over the past year, we’re proud to unveil another new device together with a free download of the plug-in! Of course, with the new Ableton 9 update, Max For Live is integrated into the software which makes this device a valuable acquisition.

This new Formant Filter device has been designed especially by Daniel, who’s a programming whizz, and we’re happy to offer it up for FREE.

Here’s Daniel’s explanation of the Formant Filter device…

The Formant Filter is the latest Max For Live device from Point Blank and features a built in synth, as well as dynamic filter and pitch modulation. Formant filters replicate the different vowel sounds of the human voice, and can be used to create that talking bass sound favoured by dubstep producers, although it’s possible to create the same sound using a number of other techniques. We take a look at using formant filters in the Ableton Sound Design course when covering Analog, and you can check out Daniel taking you through the steps on our YouTube channel:

– and we also reproduce the dubstep talking bass sound using FM synthesis in the course.

The Point Blank Formant Filter allows you to process any audio source, and the formants can be modulated by the amplitude of the incoming signal or standard LFOs interpolating between 6 different vowel sounds. These can be adjusted manually or automated for precise control and the modulation range specified. The filter is supplied as an audio effect, and each parameter provides an explanation when the mouse is hovered over the control.

(NB: Don’t forget that this device will only work if you have M4L installed, and please check out our other videos in this series on our Youtube channel on how to install this device within Ableton)
