Recording engineer to Noel Gallagher, Callum Marinho, has shared the moment he received the phone call asking him to join his studio whilst he was working in a supermarket during COVID-19.

Appearing on MusicTech’s My Forever Studio podcast (in partnership with Audient), Marinho maps out his fantasy studio space, and shares some anecdotes of his career journey so far throughout his chat with hosts Chris Barker and Will Betts.

Like many musicians, producers and other creatives, Marinho found himself out of work during the pandemic and had to work in a supermarket as he waited for things to return to normal. But one day, Marinho got that one special phone call that led to him being an in-house engineer at Noel Gallagher’s Lone Star Studios in London.

“The pandemic hit, and I was like, ‘Great’, then kind of like most people in industry, I was out of work,” he begins. “I was suckling from the teat of Universal Credit, and I was like, ‘What am I doing now?’ I had my CV, and I was looking for jobs in supermarkets, anything. Most of the top three things on my CV were like..”

“Tom Jones, Coldplay… put him on fruit and veg,” jests Barker.

“I had no transferable skills, I had to take them all out because I was like, ‘No one cares at Lidl that I’ve used the Neve 8068 Console, and I’ve done all this stuff,” continues Marinho.

“I was a bit lost. And then I got a phone call from Strange Boy. He kind of co-produces a lot of stuff with Noel and I worked with him at Mono ‘cause he brought some sessions there that he was producing.

“And, yeah, he gave me a call. And he was like, ‘Noel Gallagher is setting up a studio in London, he wants an in house guy. I think you’d be good. Do you want to come for a chat and meet him? And I was like, ‘I think I can clear the diary! I was gonna wake up at 3pm again, but I’m sure I can.’”
